Ty Roach currently lives on the north shore of Oahu, but he is originally from Morehead City, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State University on a varsity wrestling scholarship where he graduated as valedictorian with a triple major in biology, botany, and chemistry and a minor in genetics. While at NCSU, Ty won 4 consecutive East Coast Surfing titles and a national title in 2008. After graduation, Ty took a few years off before applying to graduate schools to surf professionally. While attending San Diego State University as a National Science Foundation Research Fellow, Ty won his second national title and helped lead the San Diego surf team to a national team title in the process.
Ty recently graduated with his PhD in cell and molecular biology and is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the Biosphere 2, where his research focuses on merging concepts from thermodynamics and ecology to understand how energy use by bacterial and viral communities affect coral reefs. Ty is a published author in the fields of theoretical physics, microbiology, and coral reef ecology.
He is also currently collaborating with Bob Webb on a new high-performance nose-rider, The Dr. Roach Model. So, stay tuned for more to come from Bob and Ty.
